Moon Marble Company

Over the weekend Pierce's cub scout den had a trip to Moon Marble Company. Of course, we made a family outing of it. Moon Marble Company is located in a little town called Bonner Springs. About 20 minutes outside of where we live, you'd think you were on a different planet. The town is primarily a farming area with a tiny downtown and lots of open spaces.

Moon Marble Company is located in an old warehouse building and specializes in making custom, hand-made marbles. They vary in size from about a tangerine to upwards of a softball with prices running to the $1000s of dollars. They do shows several times a day in an area with bleachers and cameras focused on the work area so everyone can see the amazing work.

But, the marbles they make are just a small part of the experience. Of course they have tons of machine-made marbles of every type and size that they bring in from a manufacturing firm, and they have a full-size marble ring for practicing, BUT, mostly they sell brand-new, retro toys and games. Think of any toy or game you remember from as far back as the 50s-60s and they have it in pristine condition. Bobble heads of the Jetsons and the Flintstones, board and sports games that I'd forgotten all about until I saw them again. It was sooooo cool. Nora and I are talking about going there for a date night (without the kids), just so we can spend more time looking.

Pierce and Anna both enjoyed the field trip. Neither kid is that interested in marbles, but they really enjoyed seeing them made -watching a guy heat up glass until it becomes molten is pretty wild. Like their parents, they liked the toy section the most. As part of the field trip, each kid got to fill and bring home a tube of marbles that the picked from the store's massive collection.
